Yesterday was wonderful...we finally pulled off Avenues Open Studios...an open studio/home/yard event for artists in the Avenues area of Salt Lake City to show their artwork to the public. This was the first annual and we had 15 participating artists.
Some of us are painters, sculptors, jewelry makers, herbalists and Don Andrews and his best in the world tie-dye.
The only rule is no rules! We created this as an artist event for our community. We refuse to subject ourselves to any judging, censoring or bureaucratic oversight. All the participating artists do what they like...and, we include everyone regardless of their discipline. And...it’s all free. NO fees from artists for being a part of this artistic endeavor.
We had wonderful help from our local neighborhood restaurants...handing out maps to customers and giving us lots of moral support.
Everyone had different hours - whatever each person could do. I was open from 1-6 pm and had a huge crowd throughout the day. They ate cookies and snacks, had “other” refreshment and couldn’t have been nicer and more supportive.
Because everyone was on their private property, there was no need to get any City permits, portapotties, or other barriers to having a good time.
Followup meeting to get busy on next year at the Sweet Library on September 16th from 7-9 pm. We welcome all our neighborhood artists.
After all...this is the Avenues! We take great pride in being off the Salt Lake City grid.
Many thanks to everyone who came.
